While reorganizing old blog posts, I came across those I wrote for a Play-by-email D&D campaign back in 2007-08 with my friend Mark Gedak. We used the Dungeon Crawl Classics world and adventures, and my character, Squire Argus Fisner, went from a 0-level dungeon-crawling pre-generated, to a low-level knight on the brink of having life-changing adventures.
As I was rereading Homebound Knights, the last post I made about that game, something called my attention:
On the personal side, I look forward to some intense roleplaying with Argus. They way I set this up, Argus and his cousin Tobias are the only male heirs to the family title and holdings, with Argus having obvious priority. Thing is, since Argus joined the Order of the Red Gryphon five years ago, the one who has really been there to help the elder Fisner run the family affairs has been Tobias, who is understandably jealous. With papa Fisner now gone, the issue of the inheritance is forced, and that means Argus will have to choose where his future lies, as a knight helping out in the world, or as head of his family.
We never got to play again at that time, and although at the time we were playing D&D, this situation right here, this screams Burning Wheel to me right now!
Argus Fisner hails from the city of Argalis, where the Fisners are an old noble family that is now in decline, with Argus and his cousin Tobias the only male heirs to the eventual title and (small) holdings. Argus was sent off to a foster noble home in a neighboring kingdom and has not been home in over 15 years. Having now become a knight of the Order of the Red Gryphon, a lifelong dream made reality, Argus has to Argalis to find his father dead and the Fisner title and holdings about to be absorbed by the crown. Tobias Fisner has been managing the household since the death of the elder Fisner until the rightful heir returns, although he feels that after all the work he’s done, the inheritance should be his, not Argus’. Will Argus give his all to the knightly order and forfeit his heritage, or will he assume the head of the Fisner household and forfeit his knighthood?
- Write a Belief about being a knight of the Order of the Red Gryphon and what that means to you.
- Write a Belief about being the heir to the Fisner title and holdings and what that means to you.
- Write a Belief about how you truly feel about your cousin Tobias.
It could surely use some tightening here and there, but there’s the core situation and character, ready for an intense one-on-one Burning Wheel game. Maybe one day.
